Highlights from the Arab States, Europe and the CIS...

South-South cooperation promotes closer collaboration among countries, helping them to achieve their shared and individual development goals. The countries in both the Arab States and the Europe and the CIS regions are taking steps towards establishing a systemic solid foundation that will enable them to receive maximum benefits from South-South cooperation.

Turkey will host the Global South-South Development Expo 2017. The theme of this Expo will be “South-South Cooperation in the Era of Economic, Social and Environmental Transformation: Road to the 40th Anniversary of the Adoption of the Buenos Aires Plan of Action (BAPA+40)”. The Second Regional Networking Forum for the Arab States, Europe and the CIS, organized on the sidelines of the Astana Economic Forum 2017, discussed the role of South-South and triangular cooperation in promoting green economic partnerships. See presentations and photos
A new study by UNOSSC and UNDP was launched in Astana, Kazakhstan. Presenting the report, Ms. Cihan Sultanoglu, Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS, explained that the study is intended as a practical guide for national policy-makers, exemplifying the various forms of South-South cooperation in the ECIS region and offering advice on how to design and run such initiatives. Read more
Envoy of the Secretary-General on South-South Cooperation and Director of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation Mr. Jorge Chediek expressed the readiness of UNOSSC to scale up the work with the Regional Hub of Civil Service in Astana. Learn more.
A training course on South-South and triangular cooperation for the government focal points for South-South cooperation and representatives of technical cooperation agencies from the countries of the Arab States, Europe and the CIS has been organized by UNOSSC in cooperation with the United Nations System Staff College. Algeria, HungaryMorocco, Turkey and Uzbekistan hosted the training courses carried out as part of the Training Series on South-South and Triangular Cooperation in Implementing Agenda 2030. The training courses targeted the key staff of the ministries of agriculture and the technical cooperation agencies and were organized jointly by UNOSSC and UNSSC within the SSTC-ADFS partnership initiative. Find out more and see the photos from the training series.
Countries participating in the SSTC-ADFS partnership initiative agree on extensive exchanges of experts within their Country Components that will inform capacity-building events at the field level. In particular,  the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries of Algeria expressed an interest in the organization of the visit of three Algerian experts to Turkey for the exchange of experiences in irrigation in the face of climate change, the training series for up to 100 Algerian farmers in three different areas with a focus on the role of associations and cooperatives in agricultural development, the rational use of agricultural irrigation water and the valorization of agricultural products as well as in the participation of Algerian experts in the conference on Development of Organic Agriculture to be held in August in Uzbekistan.

Development Solutions

In this section, the Division for Arab States, Europe and the CIS presents an overview of some of the newest development solutions placed on the southsouthworld.org mapping portal, which was developed with the support of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and UNDP RBAS. This mapping tool is intended to provide "one-stop shop" access to practical, easy-to-use expertise in the broad range of South-South cooperation mechanisms and solutions in the two regions. Success in implementing innovative approaches to solving problems in diverse areas can inspire stakeholders to facilitate the replication of those solutions in other countries.

Kazakhstan: Innovations for Sustainable Fish Farming

The patented innovation of fertilized caviar of pike perch developed and tested by Kazakhstan scientists in the south of the country allows improvement in the productivity and sustainability of fish farms. The innovation contributes to improving food security through the new fish farming methods. 


The technology of water harvesting and conservation agriculture was developed and demonstrated in Sudan. The solution enabled alleviation of the most common impacts of drought and dry spells on rain-fed-crop productivity. 
Turkey: Preventing Conflicts between Aquaculture and Tourism

New regulations on environmentally sustainable aquaculture adopted in Turkey in 2007, as well as support from the farmers' associations enabled the minimization of the conflicts between the public, tourism stakeholders and fish farmers due to environmental or visual pollution created by aquaculture.  

Morocco: The National System of Animal Identification and Traceability

The SNIT – Système national d’identification et traçabilité animales – is a tool for the management of animal diseases and food safety. By integrating the identification formula, Morocco is now aligned with international standards and is effectively improving the health programme management and production performance control of livestock.

Egypt: Addressing the Needs of the Hearing Impaired
A package of software was developed to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities by using information and communication technologies (ICTs) to facilitate access to information and knowledge, boost interaction with the community and increase opportunities for employment. Tawasol is intended for disabled students and their teachers and families to enhance communication between each other and society.
In 2006, the Badacsony Research Institute for Viticulture and Oenology started a long-term experiment with a series of comparative tests on soil cultivation methods. In the experiment, the mulching process within organic plant residues was found to be optimal and the most effective in terms of soil nutrient supply and moisture retention.

South-South Cooperation around the World

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres highlights the importance of South-South cooperation in his report on repositioning the United Nations development system to deliver on the 2030 Agenda.

Conference Announcement

International Conference on Development of Organic Agriculture in Central Asia, 22-24 August 2017, Tashkent and Samarkand, Uzbekistan

The Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources of the Republic of Uzbekistan in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is organizing an international conference on the development of organic agriculture in Central Asia.

The centuries-old culture of traditional vegetable growing and gardening in Uzbekistan and other Central Asian countries is based on the principles of biological farming and the use of natural fertilizers that allow growing ecologically clean vegetables and fruits with a unique taste and nutritional value. It offers a huge potential for the development of organic production in the region.

Training Opportunity

The training course on UN Catalytic Support to South-South and Triangular Cooperation in Implementing the 2030 Agenda is intended to provide UN staff and development practitioners with a sound understanding of the key principles of South-South and triangular cooperation, as well as the tools and methods to mobilize partnerships in the context of the 2030 Agenda.
Developed by the UNSSC Knowledge Centre for Sustainable Development in close cooperation with UNOSSC, the course will be delivered on 17-19 October 2017 in Bonn, Germany. For more information, please click here.

United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation:
The United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) promotes, coordinates and supports South-South and triangular cooperation on a global and United Nations system-wide basis. Formerly known as the Special Unit for South-South Cooperation, the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation, hosted by UNDP, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1974. It receives policy directives and guidance from the General Assembly High-level Committee (HLC) on South-South Cooperation, which is a committee of the whole and a subsidiary body of the General Assembly that reviews worldwide progress in South-South cooperation.
