We're Thinking of You!
While the world takes a collective pause, we want you to know we're thinking of you! Although times are uncertain, getting back to our roots and connecting with people from our past can help ground and connect us as we stay indoors and social distance.

With that in mind, we'd like to use this issue of the UCDS Alumni Newsletter to reconnect you with a few of our awesome alumni who are making a positive difference in the world.

We hope this issue sparks your imagination and reinforces the good in the world, which is what we need now more than ever!
Alumni Updates
Margaret Garrison, Moving on Class of 2007
Margaret Garrison graduated with a Bachelor in Fine Art degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, MD in 2018. She spent her undergrad studying fibers and textiles, specifically apparel design and digital fabrication. She showcased collections at various MICA student fashion shows, DC fashion week and most recently debuted her SS2020 collection, Half Time, at NYFW. This collection featured eight looks, all hand made by Garrison. Using CAD software, she designed and 3D printed oversized zippers as functional closures for her collection. Additionally, she 3D printed the frames for her glasses, and laser cut the lenses and bracelets to complete the whole look.

Margaret currently resides in Baltimore, MD working at Stanley Black & Decker as the Makerspace Manager of the company’s only makerspace. She continues her studies from school helping engineers and innovation teams through rapid prototyping, and empowering employees to use their hands to create and innovate.

COLLECTION STATEMENT
HALF TIME is inspired by the repetition and form of a zipper. Zippers were originally designed for kids to easily dress themselves. In this collection, hundreds of 3D printed zipper parts were created and hand sewn to reference a classic textile closure. As oversized objects, the repetition of each zipper tooth is conceptual while maintaining functionality.

Halftime is a pivotal point in a sporting event—teams come together, evaluate strategy, and “change things up” to push forward. Inspired by silhouettes and materials from sportswear, uniforms, and outdoor gear, HALF TIME creates the same attitude shift that halftime does during a sporting event—when classic apparel techniques evolve to change trends.
Kees Beemster Leverenz, Moving on Class Of 2000
My name is Kees Beemster Leverenz. After I moved on from UCDS I went to the Northwest School and then the University of Washington. These days I work as a software developer at Microsoft, I teach diving with Global Underwater Explorers, and I work on underwater archeology projects around the world as a rebreather diver.

I've always wanted to dive, and my mom signed me up for an introductory lesson for my 20th birthday! Thanks to her, I was in class on my birthday and underwater for the first time the very next day. I love being able to share what I see! I love taking photos and in particular I’ve developed a passion for underwater photogrammetry. This technique allows me to take shipwrecks from deep underwater and digitally recreate them in full 3D on the surface.

One of the coolest projects I’m involved with is the exploration of the Swedish flagship Mars Makalös, which sank in battle in 1564. The wooden sailing ship is perfectly preserved at the bottom of the cold Baltic Sea. It’s too deep for the scientists to dive, but we’ve created a 3D model that allows them to study it as if they were there. Of course, now that the model is complete, we’re planning on sharing it with the public so they can explore too.

I have a lot of fond memories of UCDS, but easily the most impactful was meeting one of my very best friends Riley on the first day of preschool. We’re still friends today, nearly 30 years later!

Mara Riley, Moving On Class of 2009
Mara will be graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in May. While at the Naval Academy, Mara ran track and majored in Arabic and Political Science. She also spent a semester abroad at the Israeli Naval Academy in 2019. A favorite memory from UCDS was when ‘The Bug Man’ came to school and students were allowed to eat bugs. After graduation Mara will be commissioned as a Marine Corps Officer.
Phillip Cunliffe, Moving on Class of 2000
Phillip Cunliffe and Jenna Swenson were married in Snohomish on August 10th, 2019. Phillip had two best men, Thomas Crocker and Nick Chavkin, both of which he met in kindergarten at UCDS. Phillip and Jenna are still in Seattle, making their home where they both grew up in Ballard.
Staying Connected
Welcome to our Newest Alumni Advisory Board Member!
Sarah Klute
Hi my name is Sarah Klute and I am from the Moving On Class of 2015! I went to Forest Ridge for middle school and I am currently a sophomore at Holy Names. I joined the HNA gymnastics team my freshman year, and we now have three state championship titles! I also have participated in dive and track. A fun fact about me is that I do my service through UCDS! I get the opportunity to work in classrooms with students joining in on many activities including reading time and math worksheets. I love still being a part of UCDS and I'm excited to continue to contribute as part of the Alumni Board!
