Recap of 2019
UFERN wrapped up the end of the year with a successful project group writing retreat in Portland. The Assessment Toolkit group met in December, moving their proposed paper closer to the finish line. Great job, Kari O’Connell, Erin Shortlidge, Emily Ward, Alison Jolley, Chris Lorentz, and Stephanie Shaulskiy!
In the fall we held the second Network meeting at the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest in Blue River, Oregon. Presentations included: The nature of undergraduate field experiences: A framework to guide program design and research (Presentation & Discussion by Kari O’Connell, Kelly Hoke, and Michael Giamellaro), Connecting field course design to the student experience in undergraduate field experiences (Presentation & Discussion by Stephanie Shaulskiy, Alicia Farmer, and Alison Jolley), Mentoring Undergraduates in Field Experiences (Presentation & Discussion by Danielle Zoellner), and Connecting undergraduate field program outcomes to employer and student expectations (Presentation & Discussion by Teresa Mourad, Ajisha Alwin, Yostina Geleta).
Participants then went on to form project groups based on generated research ideas or topics. These newly formed project groups include:
Assessment Toolkit
Mentor Training
Recruitment and Selection
Enhancing Communication/Team-building practices
Scalability of Framework
If you have expertise in one of these areas, please let us know and we can connect you.
Also, in 2019 UFERN held an Inspire session at ESA, drafted a framework for undergraduate field experiences, presented multiple posters, grew the network, has a pending publication, and had close to 200 attendees to the webinar series!
It was a productive year. Great job everyone!
