Meeting Thursday, June 8, 6:30 on Zoom

Agenda for this meeting, here.
Minutes of last meeting, here.

The Agenda includes:
Proposed Bylaws Amendments and Rules for Resolutions, here. (Read more about the proposal below.)

Endorsement of Mark Ozias (D), two-term incumbent candidate for Clallam Board of County Commissioners. Mark will be present to ask for our endorsement.

He writes:
"I have worked hard during my first two terms to effectively advocate for Democratic priorities including implementing a Conservation Futures program in Clallam County, funding and completing a Climate Action Plan, working diligently to improve access to behavioral health supports, funding non-profit housing partners to build supportive housing, and ensuring we are funding rural entrepreneurship and leadership development. If re-elected I expect to continue working on all these fronts, as well as expanding our focus on projects that meet climate, disaster, and energy resilience needs. I will also continue to partner with regional and state leaders to help advance regional priorities and projects. The support and endorsement of the 24th Legislative District Democrats would mean a lot!"

Resolutions, bylaws and rules

Resolutions are an important part of our work together, but our bylaws don't really discuss them much. The Executive Committee and I see the need for a better-defined process for considering them. That way, submitters will know what to expect; the resolutions get review and fine tuning as needed; and the resolutions we send to the state party conform with their rules.

At our meeting on June 8 we will consider adopting Rules for Resolutions (all members may vote) and some bylaws changes regarding resolutions (only PCOs may vote) . Take a look at the proposal at this link.

These draft rules were developed by the Resolutions Committee and reviewed at two meetings of the Executive Committee. They are based on rules of the Washington State Democrats, the Jefferson County Democrats, and the Clallam County Democrats.

Please call the Chair (contact below) if you have any questions or suggestions. If you have amendments to propose, it would be a courtesy to the leadership (and the members) if we could have a conversation before the meeting.

News and Notes

Republicans MUST pay our bills. Their extortionate threat to deprive Americans and local governments of income is unconscionable. These hypocrites raised the debt ceiling with no fuss under the former President, all while he drove up the debt, cut taxes, and hamstrung the IRS. Now they won't pay our bills!

We have our work cut out for us right here: Getting good people into local office. Nobody is better at campaigning than Democrats in the 24th LD. Find a candidate and pitch in!  There's a lot at stake this year. Our school boards and city councils should not be arenas for Republican culture wars. You can see who has filed for office here.

In Clallam County there is one partisan election. Mark Ozias (D), incumbent on the BoCC, is running against Stan McClain (R) of Diamond Point. McClain is a California retiree who worked in the libertarian wing of the R party. He posts links to the Epoch Times and anti-vax "research."

In Sequim, we have a chance to elect Kathy Downer ... finally removing William Armacost, who created and led the QAnonsense majority. His appointees lost by a 2-1 margin two years ago. The Sequim Good Governance League has found good candidates. Sequim School Board has three primaries. Port Angeles will have one primary for City Council and several contests in the general election.

Jefferson is mostly a snooze-fest, with recently-appointed Superior Court Judge Brandon Mack and four City Councilors in Port Townsend running unopposed. The Port race is a rematch between two candidates who went 74-26 last time. The excitement will be half a dozen contested school board seats.

In Grays Harbor, our friends Mike Cooper (former GHD Chair), Jacob Borden (GHD Chair), and Bethany Whipple-Boling (GHD Vice Chair) are all running for Elma City Council. Our friend Steven Puvogel is running again for his seat in Hoquiam. Lots of contests in other GH cities!

Here's to a great election season! If you don't play golf, send this to someone who might want to play on July 7. And let's all show up for the Picnic and Rally on July 30 in Sequim to meet candidates and canvass. It will be fun!
