ISD partners with tech industry leaders to counter hate and extremism online.

This week, leaders in the tech industry announced a joint effort to fight terrorism through the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism. The forum brings together Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter and YouTube to find collaborative solutions to violent extremism.

ISD has launched a series of programmes with  Google, YouTube, Facebook and Microsoft to tackle extremism and hate-speech on the internet, already reaching millions online.

ISD's partnership with Facebook to deliver the Online Civil Courage Initiative - the first European strategic non-governmental effort to mount a proportional response to the propagation of hate, violence and terrorism online - was launched with Sheryl Sandberg in the UK this month.

ISD has delivered over 10 innovation labs training activists from 52 countries as part of a programme to build capacity and co-create counterspeech content with youth around the world. The latest lab in Kenya last month, run in partnership with Facebook and Google, produced targeted counterspeech campaigns and interventions in Swahili.
In April, ISD launched Internet Citizens, our pioneering digital citizenship programme in the UK. Developed as part of YouTube's Creators for Change, in partnership with Google, UK Youth and Livity, it seeks to build young people’s resilience to hate and extremism online and is currently running in 30 youth centres across the UK.
ISD is partnering with Microsoft on an innovative project that is surfacing and testing the impact of counter narrative content via advertisements on Bing.

As part of our partnership with the Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, ISD hosted a two-day workshop ‘Harmful Speech: At the Intersection of Algorithms and Human Behaviour’ this week in Boston. Attendees including Jigsaw, Facebook and Microsoft explored the issue of harmful speech online and how algorithms and humans should interact if we are to accurately identify and address this issue.
