Eric Esshaki calls for 3 Policy Debates with Haley Stevens

Instead of superficial sound bite answers the public is owed a deep policy discussion on health care, the economy and public safety.

Birmingham, MI Today, Republican candidate for Congress Eric Esshaki issued a call for 3 policy debates with Congresswoman Haley Stevens, representing the 11th District.  The 3 policy debates would be focused on the top issues of concern to voters and designed to have an in-depth discussion on policy and how that effects people.

“Voters are frustrated that they hear no discussion of policy. They see politicians with their clever sound bites and political stories that focus on style. Americans deserve a policy debate so they can judge who is best to represent them in Congress,” Esshaki said.

Esshaki proposed three policy debates around the top issues of concern to voters.
  1. Health Care covers a broad number of critical concerns including COVID-19, skyrocketing health insurance costs, proposals for government-run health care and the crisis in our nursing homes.

  2. The Economy debate is equally crucial to people. The pandemic has severely damaged what was a strong economy. Businesses are closing, some politicians are proposing tax increases, our national debt is an afterthought and no leader is articulating a plan to reopen our economy.

  3. This summer, with the murder of George Floyd, police and criminal justice reform became a clear priority for the American people. When rioters and looters went unchecked, calls for sane public safety steps grew.
Eric Esshaki said, “There is no candidate who can ask for a position of leadership in our country and not sit down for a complete, detailed and reasoned debate on these issues. I call on Haley Stevens and the Michigan press corps to join me in giving voters what they want and need, detailed policy debates. Absentee ballots begin mailing September 24th. These debates should start immediately.”

Esshaki noted that traditional debate organizers like the League of Women Voters (LWV) are still trying to organize their standard format. He noted the LWV are trying to have a date before absentee voting has started, but Haley Stevens has not offered any date before the back half of October.

Esshaki proposed that the policy debates would be moderated by members of the press, who would facilitate a substantive back and forth policy discussion.

In the 8th District, Democratic incumbent Congresswoman Slotkin and Republican Challenger Junge have agreed to three debates.
