Violent Crimes Task Force

Julie Humphreys-Public Safety Communication Manager

The United States is experiencing an increase in violent crime and unfortunately the City of Spokane is no exception. Recently the City has experienced a number of drive by shootings resulting in serious injury and the loss of life. This alarming trend prompted City and Police leaders to take action in announcing the formation of a Violent Crimes Task Force. The new seven-member team will address the community’s most egregious offenders to eradicate the violent crime and the accompanying drug and property crime. It will include two sergeants as supervisors and a mix of five other officers at different levels and is built based on the learnings and successes of other specialty teams the department has operated.

During their first month, the task force has been focusing on the specialized training necessary for safe and effective proactive enforcement. However, even during their initial training have been involved in several significant arrest operations.

The vast majority of Spokane residents are caring, compassionate, and peaceful individuals. The Violent Crimes Task Force has been formed to hold those few who jeopardize the safety of our community accountable for their actions.

Advocacy and the Extra Mile

by Patrick Striker & Johanna Ross

Sometimes victims need help. We all know this. The “system” can be overwhelming and confusing, and trying to get results and navigate their way to restorative justice can leave a victim feeling like they just got victimized again. Annette, one our Advocates, got some key community members to come together and help this person evict a really terrible roommate, prepare and sell his house (that sold in a few days far above asking price), find him a new place that was perfect for him, AND even help him move. It’s a pretty incredible story of what we can help facilitate for people who need us…

Quick Crime Prevention Tips:

-Hold It
Wait to post your vacation pictures until you get back from your trip. That way you're not letting everyone know you're gone.

-Open It
Don't close your blinds when you leave on vacation if you usually keep them open. The more normal your home looks, the better.

-Install It
Installing a home security system or even just exterior lights that run on timers is a good way to ramp up security around your house.
