CORSIA eligibility reflects Gold Standard principles

While the decarbonization requirements for a carbon-intensive sector like aviation under CORSIA are insufficient, for what science tells us is needed to avoid catastrophic effects of climate change, the selection criteria for standards eligible under the offsetting framework yield key insights. Gold Standard has pioneered many of these best practice approaches, which stand to set a new expectation in carbon markets.

Thanks to all of our developers for making the extra effort to deliver greater impact for more than 16 years!

What CORSIA decisions means for project developers

Gold Standard was declared eligible for all project types for the CORSIA pilot phase, with some restrictions on vintage and microscale.

Vintage
Gold Standard projects that have a first crediting period start date on or after 1 January 2016 are eligible to supply credits for CORSIA, for credits with vintages between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2020.

Microscale
Microscale projects that use the Gold Standard Validation and Verification Fund are not eligible to supply credits to the CORSIA scheme. If you have questions on whether your project is eligible or to discuss options to become eligible for future issuances, please contact SustainCERT.

Technical updates to streamline certification while maintaining rigour

A core part of Gold Standard's 2025 strategy and focus of our partnership with SustainCERT is to help make Gold Standard for the Global Goals more easily understandable and to streamline the certification process without losing robustness. Our recent COVID-19 guidance was intended to do this during a time where travel and physical meetings are not possible. We intend to learn from these measures and bring forward any flexibility measures that provide the necessary level of assurance.

Our Technical Advisory Committee has also approved Rule Updates for this purpose. Updates are aimed at providing appropriate flexibility for projects transitioning to Gold Standard from other standards as well as enabling project developers to more efficiently scale their programmes of activities (PoAs) to increase their impact. The last Rule Update ensures that all projects transitioning to Gold Standard adhere to the same crediting period requirements.

 STANDARD WORK PLAN 2020

Following ISEAL requirements for good practice, Gold Standard publishes an annual work plan  to inform stakeholders of anticipated updates to the standard and our supporting governance.

 PUBLIC  CONSULTATION

Monitoring + Evaluation system

In October 2019, Gold Standard became an associate member of ISEAL, having met entry-level criteria of each of the three ISEAL Codes of Good Practice – Standard-Setting, Assurance and Impacts. Gold Standard is the first climate-centric standard to reach this status, joining a growing number of initiatives that are driving positive social and environmental change across multiple sectors.

As part of this commitment, we have designed a Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) system to track progress toward intended outcomes and evaluate the contribution that our standards system makes toward achieving long-term social, environmental or economic impacts.

This is expected to help us improve our standards system and its effectiveness, build capacity by learning from experience, inform strategy regarding policy decisions, provide accountability to stakeholders, earn credibility through willingness to be open about the results (good or bad) of the standards system, and more.

The consultation is open from 14 May to 14 July 2020. We hope you will provide your input into this process.
