What is Main Project Work?
Tips for Writing This Section
But I Don't Have A Lot...
This Month's Challenge

You’ve already introduced yourself to the judges — now it’s time to show them what you have accomplished. This month’s focus is your Main Project Work section. This is where you write down everything you’ve done in your main project area since January 1. Whether you’ve raised animals, planted a garden, built something cool, or researched your topic, this section is where you let that work shine.

Your Main Project Work is anything directly related to the project area you’re competing in. Here are some examples of what to include:

  • Things you created or maintained:
Articles you made, animals you cared for, land or plants you tended, exhibits you prepared, etc.

  • Learning experiences:
Workshops or classes, tours, field trips, interviews, books or articles you’ve read, online research, videos you watched to learn something new

  • Honors and awards:
Any ribbons, certificates, or honors earned in your project area

  • Measurements of your work:
Number of hours spent, number of acres cared for, quantity of items made, animals raised, etc.

This section should be written in bullet points. Be clear and specific. Use numbers when you can. Think: who, what, when, where, and what happened.

Example for an Environmental Science project:

  • Helped my family install a rain barrel at our house (4 hours)

  • Collected and sorted recycling at home weekly since January (52 hours)

  • Attended Forsyth County Recycling Center tour in June (2 hours)

  • Won 2nd place in the 4-H Earth Day poster contest

Each bullet should focus only on work in your main project — things like leadership or service belong in other sections and will come later.

💡 Quick Tips:

  • Use past tense verbs like “attended,” “created,” “researched,” or “presented”

  • Keep it neat and organized

  • Don’t feel like you need to fill the whole page — just be thorough and honest

Keep it up! It’s only August, which means you still have plenty of time to grow your Main Project Work section. Keep learning, building, creating, and exploring your topic all the way through December. Every experience you add helps tell your 4-H story. You’ve got this!

If you need help brainstorming ways to add more to this section, the 4-H staff is always here to help. Just reach out!

Make a list of everything you’ve done in your main project area since January 1. Not sure if something should go in Main Project Work or another section? Go ahead and write it down so you don't forget. We can always move it later!

Turn your thoughts into clean, organized bullet points with clear details.

Ask an adult to review your list and help you make sure it’s easy to read.

Save a polished version to add to your portfolio!
