Happy American Indian Heritage Month! We have so much in store for the community. See the individual updates in this issue of our newsletter to learn more.
On Veterans Day, November 11th, IHC will be closed. Consider joining the National Museum of the American Indian in honoring the exceptional military service of American Indians in a formal dedication of the National Native American Veterans Memorial, in Washington, DC. The dedication and processional will honor American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian veterans and their families.
As a U.S. Army Veteran, having served as a U.S. Paratrooper (Airborne), I was deployed several times throughout my service. I am honored to attend this procession in person and represent our community here in San Jose, and abroad. I extend a warm invitation to you to participate, in person, or virtually.
For more information about the upcoming Veteran’s Procession in Washington, DC, click here: Link to Livestream
I’d also like to take a moment to acknowledge my fellow veterans at IHC, including our Board of Directors President, Pablo Viramontes. Mr. Viramontes, who is of Yaqui descent, is a master artist and a graduate of San Jose State University, where he earned his Master’s degree. In addition to serving on the IHC Board of Directors since 2005, Pablo dedicated his career to teaching at the Santa Clara County Office of Education Alternative School for over 35 years. We are grateful for your dedication to community and service!

San Jose Native Youth Empowerment Group: Arts & Crafts Workshop Highlight
On Thursday, October 27th, our Native Youth Empowerment Group enjoyed a night creating hand-painted earrings and art pieces with Counseling Prevention staff! Participants learned how to create art that helps them express themselves, reduce stress, and how creating art is significant to their health and well-being. When youth create art, it encourages them to have positive self-confidence and express themselves creatively.
Contact jduran@ihcscv.org for more information on how your youth can be a part of our San Jose Native Youth Empowerment Group!
