Over 600,000 Rohingya refugees have arrived in Bangladesh since August 25, fleeing violence and persecution in Myanmar. Today an update to the UN response plan was released, seeking $434 million which is urgently needed to scale up the relief operation in support of the refugees and the host communities where they are seeking refuge. In support of this, an additional US$12 million from CERF has been allocated to assist in the establishment of new sites for the newly arrived refugees. Unfortunately, this appalling situation is not over.

CERF reaches annual funding goal of $450 million

UN CERF grants IOM USD 875,000 to help DR Congo displaced
Through CERF funding, IOM will facilitate the transfer and return of displaced people currently residing in twelve spontaneous displacement sites in and around Kalemie city in Tanganyika province. In these sites, approximately 90,000 people live in dire conditions and need urgent humanitarian assistance.

In October, CERF allocated US$ 64,063,541, of which $31,134,996 from the Rapid Response Window, and $32,928,545 from the Underfunded Emergency Window.

Heading off hunger in the other Congo
Over the past year, insecurity has taken a toll on food production. In July 2017, the Government and the UN rang the alarm, launching a US$24 million humanitarian appeal to address urgent humanitarian needs for 138,000 people affected by the Pool crisis. Thanks to CERF, WFP received the resources to kick off the response.

UN Migration Agency Delivers Hygiene Kits to Rohingya Refugees in Bangladesh
IOM is distributing hygiene kits to the most vulnerable of hundreds of thousands of people who have fled violence in Myanmar’s North Rakhine State for the relative safety of the vast refugee settlements that now cover the Cox’s Bazar district of southern Bangladesh. The kits are funded by CERF.

UN Migration Agency Responding to Urgent Shelter Needs of Thousands Affected by Hurricane Maria in Dominica
Additional to the USD 100,000 released by IOM to scale up the shelter response in Dominica, USD 350,000 has been secured from CERF for shelter and DTM (Displacement Track Matrix) deployment.

For 2017, 46 donors have contributed a total of $447.2 million to CERF, and 5 other donors have pledged an additional $8.7 million. CERF is projecting an income of $456.3 million for 2017, which is $6.3 million above the previous funding target of $450 million.
