NPR Books Editor Petra Mayer Has Died
Petra Mayer, a beloved books editor on NPR's Culture desk, died on Saturday, 11/13. She died suddenly at Holy Cross Hospital in Maryland of what's believed to be a pulmonary embolism, said Nancy Barnes, NPR's senior vice president for news, in an email to staff. "Petra was NPR through and through," Barnes wrote. "To say that Petra will be missed simply seems inadequate."Mayer was a proud nerd with a penchant for science fiction, comics and cats, said fellow books editor Meghan Sullivan. She shared those passions with readers and listeners through her reviews of sci-fi, fantasy, romance, thrillers and comics, her trusty on-the-scene reporting at Comic-Con, and her contributions to the Book Concierge, NPR's annual literary-recommendation tool. She brought her zeal to the guest chair on occasional Pop Culture Happy Hour podcast episodes. Full obit here.

Kentucky Cable Operator Drops Cable Service

It is not signing up any new cable customers, but will help any current customers who want to keep traditional video service through a deal with Dish, while pointing broadband subscribers to all the over-the-top video streaming service choices available through their broadband connections. Cable operators large and small have made no secret of their view that the event horizon for traditional cable was not a lengthy one, witness NCTA's change to "The Internet & Television Association."
With a Wink, Judge Fights ‘Tyranny’ Of Elf On The Shelf
MARIETTA, Ga. — Santa may have fewer eyes in homes this Christmas season after a Georgia judge — jokingly — banned the Elf on the Shelf. Cobb County Superior Court Chief Judge Robert Leonard posted a mock order on Twitter Thursday banishing these elves. “Tired of living in Elf on the Shelf tyranny? Not looking forward to the Elf forgetting to move and causing your kids emotional distress? I am a public servant and will take the heat for you. My gift to tired parents,” Leonard tweeted. He recalled a “horrific incident” in his own home when “three children were sent to school in tears, with one child being labeled an ‘Elf Murderer’ and accused of making the elf ‘lose his magic.’”Given the risks of such emotional damage — and supply chain issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic — the judge wrote that he had no choice but to banish the elves from Cobb County. He did make an allowance for parents who don’t feel overwhelmed by the “Elf on the Shelf tyranny,” writing in his tweet: “If you love your elf, keep your elf. No contempts.” [AP - 11/8/21]
