Our Growing Team Takes On Education Inequity

Over the summer, Just Equations announced new team members. In addition to Melodie Baker, National Policy Director, and Francesca Henderson, Math Educator in Residence, we welcomed Administrative Associate Vera Wong, a junior at UC Berkeley pursuing a major in economics. This month she shares her story of overcoming math anxiety and misaligned math requirements, both of which are priority issues for Just Equations.

Melodie Baker has been busy this summer serving on New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s advisory council on school reopenings. In an op-ed for ScaryMommy, she shared her perspective as an education policy expert and Black mom making the decision to move her kids from an affluent school to a more racially diverse school.

In coming months, we will continue to spotlight the voices of our team members.

ICYMI: Crossing Signals Webinar

Changing the architecture of math opportunity is critical to advancing equity in education. Recent postsecondary reforms have been designed to do just that, by modernizing mathematics offerings and accelerating students’ progress toward a degree.

Our Crossing Signals report uncovered that college websites are doing only a middling job of directing students toward up-to-date options and supporting optimal decision-making. We were  joined by higher education and policy leaders for a discussion about what colleges and universities can do to better support students in math. You can find the webinar recording and presentation here. Pam and Rogéair will also discuss the research at October’s Strengthening Student Success conference.

Coming Soon: Dismantling Racism in Math Instruction Webinar

Just Equations is co-hosting a webinar with The Education Trust–West tomorrow—Thursday, October 1 at 4 PM PT—to examine what it looks like to dismantle racism in math instruction. We hope you’ll tune in. Register here

The webinar features one component of A Pathway to Equitable Math Instruction, a toolkit recently released by The Education Trust–West and over 30 education and policy partners, including Just Equations. This actionable toolkit is designed to support equitable access to math standards for grades 6-8, focusing on students who are gaining proficiency in English as well as Black and Latinx students.
