CANADA ANNOUNCES FUNDING FOR THE NAP GLOBAL NETWORK
At the G7 Summit in Halifax, Catherine McKenna, Canada’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, announced CAD 2 million in new funding for the NAP Global Network to support vulnerable countries to adapt to the impacts of climate change. Read more.
PERU’S CLIMATE CHANGE COMMUNICATORS WORKSHOP
“The media are allies in the Peruvian response to climate change, because they play a fundamental role in forming public opinion,” Fabiola Muñoz, Peru’s Minister of the Environment, told journalists at the First National Workshop of Communicators about Climate Change held in Lima last month. This workshop for journalists was part of the participatory process, “Dialoguemos para la elaboración del Reglamento de la Ley Marco sobre Cambio Climático,” led by the Ministry of Environment. THAILAND HOSTS PEER LEARNING SUMMIT ON CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION
The Network convened a Peer Learning Summit on the role of the NAP process in advancing the implementation of the adaptation goals under the Paris Agreement. The summit brought together adaptation specialists from 16 developing country governments to exchange views on potential links and alignment between the NAP process and adaptation information in Nationally Determined Contributions. The summit was one of three events focused on climate change supported by the Government of Germany and partners in Bangkok this week as part of the Capacity Building and Knowledge Exchange Week on Accelerating the Implementation of the Paris Agreement.
ADVANCING CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION IN COLOMBIA: SECTORAL EXPERIENCES
The event Advancing in Climate Change Adaptation: Sectoral Experiences, co-hosted by Colombia’s National Planning Department and the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, aimed to share knowledge and strengthen sectoral capacities in the formulation of climate change adaptation strategies. BLOG PERSPECTIVES ON COUNTRY EXPERIENCES
On the Network blog this month, Zimbabwe’s NAP focal point, Emily F. Matingo, looks at how the country’s National Adaptation Plan experience is aiming to safeguard the livelihoods of the Zimbabweans who depend on vulnerable natural resources that are being threatened by climate change.
Philip Antwi-Agyei (PhD) from Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and Antwi-Boasiako Amoah (PhD), from Ghana’s Environmental Protection Agency look at the Ghanaian vision for national adaptation planning.
CLIMATE CHANGE AND GENDER FOCAL POINTS WORKSHOP IN JAMAICA
Last month, we held a two-and-a-half-day workshop on "Integrating Gender Considerations in the National Adaptation Planning Process" alongside the Government of Jamaica, Climate Change Division and UN Women. Gender and climate change focal points from Jamaica, Saint Lucia, and Antigua and Barbuda worked together to identify critical next steps for how to integrate gender considerations into national adaptation plans and policymaking. - The Global Commission on Adaptation, a new initiative that will raise the visibility of climate change adaptation and catalyze a global movement to bring scale and speed to adaptation solutions, was launched Tuesday.
- Saint Lucia has submitted its NAP to the UNFCCC.
- Jordan is working to finalize its NAP later this year to achieve adaptation through planning, mainstreaming and stakeholder engagement.
- Tonga has launched its revised Joint National Action Plan on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management.
- The Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina received a USD 2.56 million grant from the Green Climate Fund to advance the NAP process, with UNDP support.
