Winter Course: Promoting Media Literacy and Youth Civic Engagement

This winter CERG and KQED are offering the 6-week online course, Promoting Media Literacy and Youth Civic Engagement, to educators for FREE. The course will train educators to provide the civic and digital knowledge, skills, and literacies necessary for their students to navigate the changing landscape of the digital age. In particular, participants will learn to support youth in enacting core participatory practices such as researching issues of concern, determining the accuracy and credibility of information found online, engaging in dialogue on- and offline, creating and publishing media, circulating perspectives to a multitude of audiences, and taking informed action.

The course will be led by Erica Hodgin, the co-director of CERG, and Jordan Stewart-Rozema, the media literacy professional development specialist at KQED. Participants interested in receiving course credit will have the option to purchase four units through UCRX for $260. The course will run from February 17-March 29, 2020.

New research by CERG's Benjamin Bowyer and Joseph Kahne found that participants' intentions to circulate a post on social media were strongly influenced by whether that post aligned with their ideology, but not by whether it contained misinformation. Read the full study here.
