Stakeholder consultation on standards and guidelines extended to 3 July
The stakeholder consultation on standards and guidelines started on 6 May and was initially planned to last 60 days, until 7 June 2021. It has now been extended until 3 July to allow ample time for stakeholders to provide comments on the seven draft documents issued for consultation. The standards and guidelines are designed to complement the draft regulations for the exploitation of mineral resources in the Area, which are currently being developed by ISA.

Face-to-face meetings of the ISA 26th session postponed to later date in 2021
|

The President of the Assembly of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) for the 26th session, Ambassador H.E. Mr. Denys Wibaux from France, and the President of the ISA Council for the 26th session, Rear Admiral Md. Khurshed Alam from Bangladesh, have announced in a joint letter shared with all Members of ISA the decision taken in consultation with the Secretary-General to postpone the face-to-face meetings of the 26th session of the Assembly and the Council to a later date during the year. Following a consultation with members of their respective bureaus, the President of ISA Council and the President of ISA Assembly concluded that the current situation related to the COVID-19 pandemic and associated travel restrictions were not conducive to face-to-face meetings.

Permanent Representative of Gabon presents his credentials to ISA Secretary-General

H.E. Mr. Michel Xavier Bian has been the Permanent Representative of Gabon to the UN since 2017 and was designated Permanent Representative to ISA on 11 February 2021. Prior to these appointments, Mr. Biang was Ambassador of Gabon to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, accredited concurrently to Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda (2015-2017).

Second session of the Deep-DiplomaSea webinar series for diplomats and UN senior representatives to be held in July 2021

The second edition of ISA's Deep-DiplomaSea webinar will be held on 8 July 2021 with the aim to raise awareness of ISA's role, mandate and work among personnel of permanent missions to ISA and the United Nations. Over 70 participants attended the first edition of the webinar held on 25 March.

Nominations open for 2020-2021 edition of ISA Secretary-General's Award for Excellence in Deep-Sea Research
Nominations are open for the Third Edition of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) Secretary-General’s Award for Excellence in Deep-Sea Research. Launched at the ISA Assembly in July 2018, the Award recognizes and encourages the achievements of young researchers from developing countries who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of scientific knowledge of the deep-sea environment, or to the development of environmentally sustainable regulatory frameworks. This unique initiative is sponsored by Monaco and Tonga Offshore Mining Ltd (TOML).

ISA officially joins the International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) network of IOC-UNESCO as a node for Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS)

ISA has joined the IODE network of IOC-UNESCO as an Associate Data Unit enabling the ISA Secretariat to serve as a node for IODE's Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS). This collaboration will further enhance global access to the biodiversity data contained in the ISA database DeepData, including taxonomic information, species abundance and distribution.

ISA is receiving applications until 5 July 2021 for three scholarship opportunities provided by Nauru Ocean Resources Inc (NORI) and Marawa Research and Exploration Ltd in accordance with their obligations under their respective exploration contracts for polymetallic nodules with ISA. NORI is offering one scholarship for a master's degree (12-18 months) in marine management, biology, environmental science, marine science, Earth sciences, geosciences or geology. Marawa is offering two scholarships for an undergraduate degree in marine science, geology or engineering. At least one scholarship will be reserved for a woman. The scholarships are for candidates from developing States Members of ISA to attend the University of the South Pacific at its campus in Fiji.

Map of Blue Minerals Jamaica Ltd.'s contract area for polymetallic nodules in the CCZ now available
Blue Minerals Jamaica Ltd. (BMJ) and ISA have signed a 15-year contract for the exploration of polymetallic nodules in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) in the Pacific Ocean. The geographical area available for exploration by BMJ in the CCZ covers almost 75,000 km², made of parts of reserved areas contributed by UK Seabed Resources Ltd, the government of the Republic of Korea and the Interoceanmetal Joint Organization. The regional map for the Clarion-Clipperton zone has also been updated accordingly.
