In a few short months, the coronavirus pandemic has changed the world as we know it. While the long-term health, economic and political impacts aren’t yet fully known, could this unprecedented event fundamentally alter the global economic architecture and Bretton Woods system indefinitely? 2020 Annual Meeting Postponed

Our first priority is the health and safety of our membership and community, and as COVID-19 has spread over the past few weeks, regrettably we have decided to postpone our Annual Meeting until a later date TBD. Read more here.  

IMF/WB 2020 Spring Meetings Now Virtual

The 2020 Spring Meetings will be held virtually this year, to ensure the health and safety of participants and staff given health concerns around COVID-19. Registration to participate in the Spring Meetings in person has been suspended. Stay tuned for information on how to follow the Spring Meetings here.

Recent Highlights

The World Bank and International Monetary Fund Updates: COVID-19

President, David Malpass, summarizes the latest World Bank responses and actions to COVID-19. The IMF provides more insight into the $50 billion Rapid-dispursing Emergency Financing Facilities for vulnerable countries.

Antoinette Sayeh, Distinguised Visiting Fellow at the Center for Global Development, was appointed the Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund.  

 

Geoffrey Okamoto, Former Acting Assistant Secretary in International Markets and Development at the U.S. Department Of The Treasury, was appointed the First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund.

On January  24, 2020, the Bretton Woods Committee hosted a virtual conference,  Regional Spotlight:  Is Turkey Poised for Recovery or Freefall?,  which explored the risks and opportunities facing the Turkish economy in 2020 as it rebounds from protracted currency and debt crises in 2018. Featured speakers included Murat  Köprülü, Managing Partner at M.E. Markets, LLC, and Timothy Ash, Senior Emerging Markets Sovereign Strategist at BlueBay Asset Management. Gary Kleiman, Co-founder of Kleiman International Consultants moderated the conversation. Read or watch the panel here.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Former Minister of Finance of Nigeria, was recently appointed by the President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, as a member of the country’s Presidential Economic Advisory Council (PEAC).
