JANUARY NEWSLETTER

KICKOFF PARTY

The holidays are finally out of the way and we can all focus our hopes and joy on the real most wonderful time of year – the Cycle Oregon Kickoff Party! This is the night we will reveal exactly where GRAVEL, Joyride, WEEKENDER and Classic will be riding in 2020. And since it’s a brand new decade, the party will be at a cool new venue. The Loft at 8th Avenue will be chocked full of sponsors, gear, live music, new and old friends, and tasty food and drink.

Doors open at 6 p.m. sharp. Can’t wait to see you all there.

EARLY BIRD GETS THE RIDE

Early bird registration for the 2020 Classic is open! You can lock in your place on this unparalleled Oregon riding experience NOW at last year's pricing, and then have the next nine months to be stoked out of your mind.

If you were among the lucky riders to join us on our 2019 Classic, you’ll score yourself a FREE 2020 Classic event jersey if you register before January 29, when the registration fee increases to $1099.

2020 is going to bring with it all kinds of new stuff – we’ve got short options, we’ve got long options, we’ve got gravel options, we have multiple layover days, bonus activities, and even more opportunities to really become part of the communities.

The grand reveal of this year’s route will happen at our Kickoff Party on January 29 at The Loft at 8th Avenue, and trust us, you won’t want to miss it!

THE RESOLUTION REVOLUTION

The beginning of a new year brings some level of introspection in most people. We look back, think about how we spent the last 365 days, and set goals for the next 365.

When former professional bike racer Bobby Lea looked back, he realized that he spent a lot of time idly scrolling around on a smartphone – time that could have been much better spent actively riding around on a bike. Bobby’s resolution for this year, complete with catchy hashtag, is #MOREBIKELESSPHONE. You can read the full article Bobby wrote for Bicycling here. He makes some awfully good points.

What are some of your resolutions for 2020, bike-related or otherwise? Share them with us on our blog here.

THE "IDAHO STOP" STARTS IN OREGON

Signed into law by Governor Kate Brown on August 6, 2019, Senate Bill 998 became effective at midnight January 1, 2020. What’s Senate Bill 998 you ask? Colloquially known as the Idaho Stop Law, this new legislation allows bicycle users throughout the Beaver State to treat stop signs as yield signs (completely blowing through a stop sign is still a major no-no). Idaho's version of this law has been in effect since 1982 with Delaware becoming the second state in 2017, Colorado in 2018, and Arkansas and Oregon in 2019. As with any new law, there's a lot of language and opinion but our friends at Bike Portland posted an excellent overview written by attorney Ray Thomas. Advocates, politicians, and law enforcement from across the state helped to shape this bill and we are grateful to everyone for their dedicated and intelligent work to make Oregon such a wonderful place to ride a bicycle.

WHEN STOP MEANS YIELD

Before the Idaho Stop became law in Oregon, the bike lobby had to make their case. This video breaks down everything you need to know about how it works and what you need to know as a cyclist.
