Election night 2016 was something people will remember for the rest of their lives. Something in the world shifted that day.
For some, it was a celebration. Finally, the Clintons had been defeated. For most, it was a devastation. Trump had been elected.
I reported outside of the literal glass-ceilinged Javits center, not surprised at all by the turn of events. I knew after reporting from the campaign trail from start to finish, from both the Trump campaign and the Clinton campaign, that Hillary Clinton was going to lose.
Her hubris was always going to get the best of her.
She didn't pay attention to, or even see, the desperation of so many Americans.
As comedian Michelle Wolf so candidly phrased it during the recent White House Correspondents' Dinner, "It is kind of crazy the Trump campaign was in contact with Russia when the Hillary campaign wasn't even in contact with Michigan. It's a direct flight. It's so close."
Indeed it is.
Which is why I'm happy to announce that I've released Chapter 8 of my book, Corporate Con Job! This is why Hillary Clinton lost.
Here's an excerpt:
Corporate Con Job Chapter 8
ELECTION NIGHT AND THE DEMISE OF NEOLIBARALISM
In reality, Trump had them at NAFTA: In Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio,
and Pennsylvania. And Clinton lost them at “Stronger Together,” Goldman Sachs speeches, and incrementalism when radical change was needed. It’s really not more complicated than that.
So, it was a tall task for me on election night to interview Clinton supporters who, coming out of New York’s Jacob Javits Center when the election was called for Trump, looked like they had just seen the slaughter of 1,000 puppies. Person after person, and all I saw was shock and terror in their eyes.
“To say it’s like a funeral would be a real understatement,” Clinton supporter Marc Levine told me on the corner of 11th avenue a breath away from the Hudson River. “Imagine somebody who had amazing promise and was totally loved died before they could accomplish all these amazing things.”
I’m not gonna bullshit you; this was probably one of the toughest rounds of interviews I did on the entire campaign trail. I felt I had to work against myself. My natural instinct, and desire, was to figura- tively knock these fuckers over the head with a combo platter of “I told you so,” “what were you thinking,” and “are you happy now that your blindness elected Trump?”
I’m a no bullshit person who doesn’t pause that for political funerals. But, even though I knew it wouldn’t win me accolades among TYT viewers, my humanity wouldn’t let me do it. There would be a time to confront all the neoliberal, tone-deaf, and deliberately ignorant Clinton supporters who supported her over all common sense evidence that indicated Bernie was the strongest candidate to, not only defeat Trump, but to clobber him. But this wasn’t the night for it...
