I’m Andrea Valdez, editor in chief of The 19th. As a reader, you know equity and inclusivity are central to our journalism. We are committed to publishing diverse, human-focused stories that contextualize the experiences of women from all walks of life. We can't do this work without your support.
To ensure that we remain true to this core mission, we have built a diverse team of journalists who live in nine different states across the country. Let me introduce you to a few.
Chebali Carazzana, who lives in Orlando, Fla., covers women and the economy for The 19th. Carazzana will be closely covering the economic fallout of the coronavirus pandemic, which has disproportionately impacted women, especially women of color. More Latinas have lost jobs in the wake of coronavirus than any other subset of women. Black women are a close second.
This pandemic has also revealed other inequities women face, like shouldering the burden for providing child care or becoming de facto teachers in a distance-learning environment. What toll does this double-shift take on their mental health and physical wellbeing? Shefali Luthra, a member of our Washington, D.C., bureau, will be covering these issues and more as she explores the intersection of women and health care.
In a presidential election year, it’s easy to be consumed with the top of the ticket, but Barbara Rodriguez, our statehouses reporter who lives in Des Moines, Iowa, will be following the equally important down-ballot races for local legislatures and executive offices. Don’t miss her latest story about the challenges women face while running for office in the time of COVID-19.
