We are building The 19th at a truly unprecedented time for women in America.
A global pandemic is disproportionately affecting women in virtually every arena except for mortality rates, from job losses to the overnight erosion of child care. And a modern-day civil rights movement spurred by police violence against people of color has renewed a national dialogue around racial and gender equity.
Meanwhile, the U.S. still has the worst maternal mortality rate of any country in the developed world. Four in 10 women say they’ve faced gender discrimination in workplaces that on average that still pay men nearly 20 cents more for every dollar paid to them (the pay gap is even more pronounced for women of color). All while the nation inches nearer to electing its first female vice president.
We believe how women engage on these issues will play a large part in the outcomes achieved — and that includes how they engage with the media.
That’s why community engagement is a cornerstone of what we do. This includes listening to you, our readers — inviting your feedback, creating opportunities for you to share your lived experiences with our newsroom and each other, connecting you with experts and public officials, and fostering civil dialogue through virtual and in-person events.
If you value a newsroom that listens to and engages with you, we hope you’ll consider becoming a member of The 19th. Every gift helps ensure our nonprofit newsroom has the resources needed to empower *all* women with the information, community and tools they need to be equal participants in our democracy.
We came into this week — and our inaugural summit — with a goal of rallying 1,900 new members. The truth is that we are already almost there, and we are blown away by this growing community. So now it's time to raise the bar: We're aiming to rally 3,000 new members by Aug. 18, the centennial of the 19th amendment. Are you ready to help us build The 19th?
