FRC 238 Bits and Bytes:
2019 UNH District Event
|
|
|
The UNH District Event was event held at the Whittemore Center in Durham, NH from March 30th to the 31st. The team placed 7th out of about 40 teams at the end of qualifications. We were then selected to the 2nd seed alliance, advanced through the quarterfinals, and finished as semi-finalists. We have also qualified for the New England District Championship at Worcester Polytechnic Institute April 10th to the 13th.

We did pretty well overall at this event. Our strong suit was still scoring cargo, but we improved our panel manipulation abilities. Another aspect we improved on was being able to get on HAB Level 2 reliably. We tried this at our last competition, but were not consistently successful. We were able to hit it about 80% of the time at this competition, which was a vast improvement from North Shore. The last thing we did well was putting cargo and panels on the higher levels of the rocket. After having complications at the last competition attempting this, we practiced and fixed these issues. As well as we did at this event, there are still mechanisms we would like to add to help us complete tasks, so we will continue to iterate our designs.

Some changes were made to RIDDLER for this competition. We switched from a Velcro intake to a finger intake for panels and it was an important move to help us be more successful. We improved how we climb by using our arm to push our robot onto Level 2 just enough to gain traction on the platform. Moving forward, we would like to fix some software bugs (such as multi-button problems and improving the operator’s efficiency to pick up cargo and panels), find a way to keep panels when we are being defended, and make it easier to pick up panels from the human player station.

Based on a suggestion from the judges at our last competition, we prepared a visual representation to aid our presentation. In addition to this improvement, we also had fewer stumbles when speaking. Despite our growth, we have some things we would like to improve upon for next year. Primarily, our presentation team would like to practice more. Students will also do more volunteering and demonstrating within the community.

The scouting team decided to make a schedule to help everyone know when and what alliance they were scouting. It made everything go smoothly and more organized. We were able to use that information for the scouting meeting to help us pick teams we wanted on our alliance.

We had many judges come by our pit at this event. They were impressed by both our robot, its aesthetics, and by our Community and Operations divisions. We talked for long periods of time and had lots of fun. We did not win any awards, but we gained crucial experience.

This event was important to the growth of our team and the continual improvement of RIDDLER. Through our success at this event we qualified for the District Championship and will work to make even greater strides in the betterment of our team, our robot, and our students.
