Beers. Innovators. Fun.

Week 114 highlights

Brad sponsored beers. Can you spot an entire Startup team, a new hire at Future Fields, a politician, and a Summer Storm?

We're liking our new digs, TNT!

Now making friends at Mercer Tavern.
Every Thursday. 6-9 pm.

Brad Clark, fractional CFO and Director of the Startup TNT Board contributed $500 for the beers on top of the 50 drink tickets Mercer Tavern supplied and we had ourselves an evening!

The What’s the deal team rolled into TNT after an afternoon strategy session and told us how valuable it's been getting product advice from Nathan, the head of product of Divethru, who also dropped by with his partner Ali, who told us how she went from a junior marketing coordinator at Pogo (acquired by Communauto) to the senior marketing manager at VC-backed Deal Closer in just 4 short years.

John talked about how he went from a pandemic panic attack to an exited entrepreneur in the Cannabis space in less than a year.  He's friends with the founder of Rogue 7, who let us know that he's inching closer to closing an international partnership to improve operational excellence of pipelines using proprietary AI tools.

GreenSTEM Fellow Hillary shared that she’s ever so close to launching her first product that provides a rapid screen of early indicators of kidney disease in cats.  Meanwhile, EACOs member Abbas celebrated joining the team at another GreenSTEM company and TNT Alumnus, Future Fields

Sarah Hamilton discussed the role of a city councillor in determining how we use public dollars to support the startup ecosystem effectively.

And Emily tells us that the YEG Startup Origin stories project is nearly complete, and we can all take a ‘Startup Walking Tour’ of Old Strathcona before summer is out.

The Great Alberta Pitch Marathon is back

Remember that crazy time we had 108 startup pitches all in a single day? We didn't even know if anyone would attend. Well, 800 people registered, and 18 organizations co-hosted.

This year we're bringing it back bigger and better than ever.

Why participate?

It’s an opportunity to celebrate the success of the Alberta Startup Community. Alberta Startups raised over $455 million in 2020 - help us ensure that number keeps going up, entrepreneurs!

It’s an opportunity to share with your peers all the new and exciting things you’ve accomplished as an entrepreneur.

It’s an opportunity to provide feedback and support to your fellow entrepreneurs.

It’s an opportunity to show the world that Alberta is about a hell of a lot more than oil and gas!

It’s an opportunity to remind our politicians and policymakers that Edmonton and Calgary are among the Top 50 cities for Tech Talent in North America according to CBRE's latest report and we need help moving them up the ranks even further!

News From Across TNT

- Updates from Saskatchewan

Tim travelled to Saskatoon to visit Jesse. They hosted over 20 people at Prairie Sun Brewery.  Jesse also hosted an 'Arts in the Garden' festival at his family's farm featuring local artists and musicians including Better Music Education's Damian Eaves.

Our friends from Saskatchewan are launching their own Pitch Marathon this summer as well! Introducing The Great Saskatchewan Pitch Marathon, check out the website for details.

- Happy Hour in Calgary

YYC TNT Happy Hour kicking off August 19th

We've got our local YYC Ambassadors Jade and Neil actively exploring our YYC Happy Hour options and plan to launch it in conjunction with the Great Alberta Pitch Marathon YYC Afterparty on August 19th.

Stay tuned for more updates!

Politics at TNT: Neutral but still fun!

It's election season and candidates want to meet entrepreneurs.

We think it is awesome that local politicians and political candidates want to engage with the startup community in informal ways by attending our happy hour or host meet and greets that lead into our happy hour.

We encourage our community to attend, share your views, and discuss what issues are important to the startup community.

However, Startup TNT will not be officially endorsing any political candidates; we do of course encourage all members of our community to be politically active and support the candidates you believe in.

A 'Meet and Greet' leading directly into the TNT happy hour is coming up on the 29th with Cheryll Watson. We hope to see all serious mayoral candidates do the same.

Kim Krushell  plans to stop by August 5th.

Sponsor Spotlight

We're delighted to welcome BDC back as a sponsor for their second year in a row, now as a TNT BFF!

And when they say BFF, they mean it! Eibi, the new senior account manager for the technology industry based out of Calgary, Co-Hosted one of our marquee summit events: VC pitch night.

Speaking of VCs, did you know BDC offers Bridge Financing to tech companies - like the one they closed with YEG startup G2V Optics as part of the $2.6 million round led by another TNT sponsor, the Accelerate Fund.

It is incredible to witness so many of our community partners working together to build out this ecosystem.

They also offer loans for companies with recurring revenue and provide startup advisory services.

Reach out to Eibi and the team at BDC or ask us for an intro if you want to explore how BDC may be able to help your company meet its capital needs.

Thank you to our sponsors!

We're renewing all our sponsorship agreements this month.
Want to be part of this awesome group of startup community fortifiers helping us have fun, make friends, and build great companies together?

$500 from Brad Clark for the Bar Tab!

Startup TNT Director and founder of Endeavour Advisory Brad Clark contributed $500 to the bar tab this week!

Brad left his day job nearly 2 years ago to build out his own practice as a fractional CFO, working directly with startups to bring professionalism to their financial management practices.

He's a huge support of the tech community and we're happy to have him as a beer sponsor, TNT Director, and a friend.
