2019 FRC 238 Bits and Bytes:
Build Season Week 3
Week three of build season has consisted of many successes. From advancements in our programming to collaborations between our CAD and Mechanical subteams, week three has been productive - all while we were studying and taking mid-terms. One thing the team has also been working on is prepping our 2017 robot to demo.

Technical Division

Mechanical

Mechanical has been working on the velcro intake prototype, but have had to modify it due to previous design failures. CAD has expressed that the design does not cooperate with their current roller and velcro intake. Other than the minor setback, everything has been working rather consistently with only a few challenges that were managed with prototyping.

CAD

CAD has been working on the robot’s intake for both the panel and cargo. We are currently experimenting with walls to confine the ball within the intake. We are also venturing to put electronics in the belly pan and searching for the correct gear boxes. We are collaborating with the prototyping team on incorporating the designs so that they are optimally effective.

Software

We have been working on the encoders value in our tolerance. Our struggles were limited and we found success with the SmartDashboard, this year’s control system. Our goal for the week ahead is to familiarize ourselves with the new software provided by WPI and FIRST.

Community Division

Right now, in the community division, we have been kept busy with Chairman’s and our weekly newsletter, 238 Bits and Bytes.

Chairman's Award

Chairman’s has been going well, for the past week we have been working on finishing and editing the rough draft of our essay and executive summaries. We have not submitted it just yet, but we are planning on submitting it on February 5th.

Fundraisers

This year we have decided to partner with the fundraising company, Great American™ to help give us ideas to continue our travel fundraising. On Monday January 28 we held a 59 minute fundraiser selling session 18 different types of cookie dough. While the cookie dough is for local deliveries only, you can visit this site www.gaschoolstore.com, click I'm Ready to Shop and input our team's code: 5582283. If you know a student on the team, input their name, or add FRC 238 Newsletter and go shopping! All proceeds go to support our team.
Newsletter

The creation of this newsletter involves all team members. Each Monday of the new week, we start by outlining the subjects that we want to put into the newsletter. When Tuesday comes around, we review the subjects one more time to make sure we didn’t miss anything. On Thursday, we have the students to write the sections and we are looking for the photos we want to use for that week's edition.

On Friday, we finish looking for the photos and also start to edit the newsletter. Saturday, which is our last day of the week, we edit the photos while the team is inputting the newsletter into MailChimp. Once the photos are edited, we add them to the newsletter in MailChimp. Before we schedule the newsletter, we have one of our mentors look over it to make sure we didn’t miss anything. Once the newsletter is all set, we schedule it for the next day.

Photography and Videography

We have continued to take photos and videos of the students working hard in the shop. We are able to keep uploading the videos to our Youtube channel. One of our students have worked on putting music to the background and cutting parts of the video that we don't want. The student has worked with photoshop and photos. Come check out the other videos that the team has on the Youtube Channel and enjoy this video.

Sponsor Spotlight

The MuShield Co. has supported the Crusaders since 2013, when our mentor Tommy joined the MuShield team. MuShield is a small company specializing in magnetic shielding with a worldwide customer base. Their support of Team 238 began as a small but generous donation. That donation has grown through the years and now also includes access to manufacturing equipment. Focused  in sheet metal fabrication, MuShield's contribution includes the use of fiber-optic laser cutters, press break forming, and traditional CNC machining centers (as well as Tommy himself). MuShield's sponsorship has allowed Team 238 to design increasingly complex parts and components, and therefore more intricate robot designs, all leading directly to higher levels of competitive play. Thank you MuShield!
