Enough is enough.
We stand in unwavering solidarity with Black communities and all those who are expressing rage over the murder of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer. This rage does not stem from this heartbreaking and disturbing incident alone, but from years of police brutality, from the disparities created by racist redlining and Jim Crow laws, and by the dark legacy of 400 years of slavery. We must all stand in solidarity with those seeking justice, systemic change, and the end of unwarranted police violence. This is long, long overdue.
At Capitol Hill Housing, we will redouble our efforts to become an anti-racist organization, and our work with communities will continue to focus on racial equity and building power in those communities. We will continue to build affordable housing so that people regardless of their race may have access to homes that allow them to build wealth and good lives. We will continue to support small businesses – especially those owned by people of color – so our communities can thrive with diversity and opportunity. We will continue to fight displacement, and we will continue to fight arm in arm with our colleagues to ensure that the Central District can be reclaimed as the center of the African American diaspora in Seattle.
We will also continue this fight. We will not let the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and countless others go forgotten. We will fight in the streets, we will fight in the board room, and we will fight at City Hall. And we will not give up until ALL of us are free at last.
