BWC Announces Leadership Updates

The Bretton Woods Committee announces preliminary updates to leadership and strategic direction. Bill Dudley, Bill Rhodes and John Lipsky are serving as the interim Executive Committee and leading a leadership transition that will formally be announced in October 2020. Randy Rodgers is transitioning to Vice Chair, Finance. Emily Slater is assuming the Executive Director role. Read more.

In Conversation: FDMDs on IMF Response to COVID19

Former FDMD, John Lipsky, and newly appointed FDMD, Geoffrey Okamoto, of the IMF provide insight on the IMF response to the coronavirus pandemic. 
On May 15, 2020, the Bretton Woods Committee hosted a virtual conference, In Conversation: FDMDs on IMF Response to COVID19. Geoffrey Okamoto, First Deputy Managing Director of the IMF, and John Lipsky, former First Deputy Managing Director of the IMF, discussed the IMF’s response to the COVID19 crisis to-date and looked ahead to future challenges and opportunities. Read more.

Legislative Update: CARES Act

Whitney Debevoise offered testimony on the importance of U.S. leadership in the World Bank Group before the House.
Over the past year, the Bretton Woods Committee has worked to raise awareness among Members of Congress and staffers on the critical role of U.S. leadership in the IFI and to help shore up support for pending pieces of legislation. We welcomed the passage of the CARES Act in March 2020 which authorized U.S. resources for the IMF, World Bank, and African Development Bank that have been critical in mounting a robust and effective response to the coronavirus crisis. Henry Owen Memorial Award 2020 Winners Announced

For this year’s Henry Owen Memorial Award essay contest, graduate students were asked how global coordination and effective multilateral governance can push back against global fragmentation. The 1st Place winning essayFragmented Governance: How Multilateralism Can Be Saved - was authored by Peter Whiteneck, American University. The 2nd Place winning essay – Time to Retrieve the First Heart of Multilateralism - was authored by Qiang Wu, John Hopkins University. We are extremely grateful to Committee Members John Donaldson, Susanna Cafaro, and William Jannace for serving on this year’s essay evaluation committee.
