March 2023 | Grassroots Voices

Women are some of the bravest pioneers, most tireless community advocates, and most dedicated leaders across our region. Nearly 40% of IAF grantees have a deliberate focus on advancing women’s empowerment and 25% of IAF grantees are led by women. The IAF’s Women INvesting in Growth and Security (WINGS) Initiative includes more than 150 locally-driven initiatives in 27 countries valued at $48.6 million. These grants increase women’s opportunities for civic engagement, access to credit, and training in leadership, vocational skills, business, and management.

For Women’s History Month, we celebrate the accomplishments of these remarkable women and girls. We highlight an exciting pilot exchange between women artisans from Indigenous communities in Mexico and the United States. We also share reflections from the IAF’s first female President & CEO, Deborah Szekely, about how she came to lead a development agency in 1984.
