Highlights from the Arab States, Europe and the CIS...

South-South cooperation promotes closer collaboration among countries, helping them to achieve their shared and individual development goals. The countries in both the Arab States and the Europe and the CIS regions are taking steps towards establishing a solid approach that will enable them to receive maximum benefits from South-South cooperation.

The United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation and the United Nations Development Programme, in partnership with Yingke Law Firm, invite you to participate in a workshop on “Investing in the SDGs through South-South and Triangular Cooperation: Promoting Conducive Policy and Legal Environments in Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States”.​
From traditional Hungarian felting to weaving on muffs and sacks with the pitted kilim techniques in Central Asia, capacities were developed through South-South training to support diversifying the incomes of rural women and men in Uzbekistan through new knowledge and skills. Read more.

The Zayed International Foundation for the Environment has launched the Zayed Green Challenge app, an innovative, green-knowledge education platform with entertainment features. This knowledge-based game app is designed to educate and create awareness of sustainable development among people of all ages. Find out more.

Development Solutions

In this section, the Division for Arab States, Europe and the CIS presents an overview of some of the newest development solutions placed on the southsouthworld.org mapping portal, which was developed with the support of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and the UNDP Regional Bureau for Arab States (RBAS). This mapping tool is intended to provide "one-stop-shop" access to practical, easy-to-use expertise in the broad range of South-South cooperation mechanisms and solutions in the two regions.

Hungary: School Fruit and Vegetables Scheme

The voluntary school fruit and vegetables scheme promotes healthy eating habits among school children. The scheme, which combines providing fruits and vegetables with relevant educational activities, is being carried out under the auspices of the National Public Health Programme.


To ensure access to basic health care for the refugees in the informal camps and remote villages, Amel Association International, a Lebanese non-governmental organization, set up the Mobile Medical Unit (MMU), a special vehicle equipped with a wide range of medical tools.
Morocco: Methodological Approach for Marine Aquaculture Spatial Planning

Innovative planning tools in marine aquaculture enabled the establishment of an exhaustive, consolidated mapping database, which provides up-to-date information for decision-making on the activities in the sector.


The colony support management system is a method based on setting pair colonies which produce honey from each colony in every pair. When applied in the correct way, it is effective in maintaining an increase in colony size and productivity.
The MENA Region: Regional Network for Integrated Waste Management (SWEEP-Net)

The SWEEP-Net network has determined its strategic orientation, developed new methods of communicating and set up a knowledge management system on integrated waste management.

Jordan: Madaba Micro Private-sector Participation

Implemented in 2004, the Micro Private-sector Participation Project introduced a new concept in water utility management. Its success has prompted the Government to replicate this experience in other areas.

Featured Publications

The 2017 report summarizes the deliverables produced in compliance with the UNOSSC guiding frameworks and regional strategic approach based on the overall operational context. As an integral part of the joint advisory offerings, the Division built up a range of tailor-made support services on South-South cooperation in the two regions.
The report explores how SSTC plays a greater role than ever before in tackling rural poverty and food insecurity and its importance in international efforts to enhance development effectiveness through innovation, new partnerships, knowledge-sharing and the scaling up of proven approaches.

The ten good and promising practices demonstrate how different South-South cooperation modalities have been used to implement programmes for children.

United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation:
The United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) promotes, coordinates and supports South-South and triangular cooperation on a global and United Nations system-wide basis. Formerly known as the Special Unit for South-South Cooperation, the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation, hosted by UNDP, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1974. It receives policy directives and guidance from the General Assembly High-level Committee (HLC) on South-South Cooperation, which is a committee of the whole and a subsidiary body of the General Assembly that reviews worldwide progress in South-South cooperation.
