Individual Brain Charting: A high-resolution brain map of cognitive functions
|

The first version of the Individual Brain Charting project dataset has been released in the open access journal Scientific Data. Funded by the HBP, the project acquires a set of high-resolution functional MRI maps of the brain during a wide range of behavioral tasks. The data will be used to develop a macroscopic functional atlas and contributes to the HBP´s research area “Human Brain Organization”. More

Massive Open Online Course for studying the multi-scale brain
|
|
|
Together with EPFL and the Allen Institute, the HBP Education Programme has developed a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on "How to study the multi-scale brain". It is a free web-based distance learning programme that combines lectures, tutorials and exercises into a broad overview on the latest tools and techniques for neuroinformatics, analysis, modelling and simulation. Citizens consulted on how to deal with possible dual use of HBP research
|
|
|
How should HBP and similar research projects address that others could use their research results for political, security, intelligence or military purposes? The Danish Board of Technology consulted 2.289 citizens in a major European citizen consultation spanning 12 countries, combining online surveys and citizen workshops. More

Join us for the HBP Open Day 2018 in Maastricht!
Maastricht University is honoured to organise this year’s HBP Open Day – Enhancing our understanding of the brain, free and open to the public. The Open Day will offer a platform for some of the most prominent researchers in the neuroscience community to engage with the public. At a dedicated HBP Science Market, visitors can learn about HBP from different virtual and physical exhibits, such as exploring the brain in virtual and augmented reality or interacting with smart robots. HBP Voucher Programm
The Human Brain Project opens its expertise and skills to researchers and groups around the world through a new voucher programme. This Call invites proposals for useful feature requests for the HBP Platform Infrastructure. The winning proposals will receive vouchers, each in the range of 6-12 months of HBP development/engineering time to implement the new feature in the HBP Platform. This Call is unique : external applicants are advised to discuss the feasibility & novelty of their feature request with HBP Platform engineers & developers who will contribute to the proposals already during the application process. The external proposal submission deadline is 25 Oct 2018. The voucher projects are expected to start beginning 2019 and will end on 31 March 2020. Information concerning the Human Brain Project’s Coordination Office
Chris Ebell has decided to leave his position as Executive Director of the HBP and Head of the HBP’s Project Coordination Office (PCO). Christian Fauteux, Deputy Executive Director of the HBP, will lead the HBP PCO and the HBP’s Management and Coordination Subproject (SP11) ad interim. The EPFL and Chris Ebell have issued a joint statement that can be read on the HBP website. Professor Katrin Amunts, Chair of the HBP’s Science and Infrastructure Board and the Project’s Scientific Research Director, commented: “Chris did a great job at a difficult time, when the Project was transitioning to the current phase, and this was recognised by the external experts who reviewed the Project in May this year. I am grateful for his collaboration and that of his team.” More

Call for Scientific Chairs of Education workshops
HBP Education is looking for Scientific Chairs for the 2019 Education Workshops. HBP Education Workshops are short teaching formats of two to three days of length. The chairs can come from within or outside of the HBP. For 2019, any date in May, June and July can be claimed for a workshop. More

An autumn full of workshops at EITN
EITN´s latest programme is out! It will begin with a workshop on SlowDyn signing off the partnering project, followed by a closed-meeting on multi-level integration using epilepsy and a workshop to share our experience with the simulators. The season will end with an event on effective connectivity from neurocultures to fMRI. EITN also supports an Art & Science school to stimulate scientific creativity. The European Institute for Theoretical Neuroscience (EITN) was created on March 2014 as part of the Theoretical Neuroscience activities of the HBP and is operated by the UNIC unit of the CNRS in Paris area. HBP School “The Brain Simulation Platform of the Human Brain Project”
Mondello (Palermo), Italy

This School will introduce participants to the HBP Brain Simulation Platform, with the main aim to train users on how to exploit the possibilities offered by the Platform to implement cellular level computational models, to use High Performance Analytics and Computing Platform systems to configure and run a simulation, and to visualise/analyse the results.

Eighth SpiNNaker Workshop
University of Manchester
Sept. 11, 2018 – Sept. 14, 2018
The workshop will focus on simulation of spiking neural networks using PyNN 0.9 on the SpiNNaker platform. Attendees should have some experience with Python. For the new neuron models and learning rules topics, some background in C is recommended.

HBP Open Day 2018
Enhancing our understanding of the brain
15 October 2018, MECC, Maastricht, Netherlands
The HBP Open Day is an annual outreach event for the Human Brain Project to present its work to scientists, the media, the public and other stakeholders. The Open Day includes presentations by esteemed experts coming from a range of disciplines related to the HBP’s work, such as the famous Dutch brain researcher Prof Dick Swaab. The event will also host the HBP Science Market, an exhibition of cutting-edge technology and scientific results developed within the HBP. Visitors will get the opportunity to directly interact with robots, learn about brain simulation and explore collaboration opportunities with experts from the project. Participation is free, registration is required.

The most promising approach to achieve breakthroughs in the understanding of the human brain is through a collaborative effort of the relevant key players in the field of neuroscience and future computing. Following the example of other successfully organized research communities, the European Human Brain Project (HBP) is building such a research infrastructure, the HBP Joint Platform. Germany plays a major role in this endeavor, and contributes with its European partners to many of its activities. The 10-year project has completed its Ramp-Up Phase and subsequent SGA1 funding period and is now celebrating its halftime. This is a good reason to take a closer look at the successes achieved so far, but also at the challenges that still lie ahead. Registration is open until September 14, 2018.
