CONGRATULATIONS 2017 Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Excellence in Education
Congratulations to Dr Shengyu Fan and Ms Emi Yoshida, who were award recipients at the ANU Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Excellence in Education award night last week. Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian Schmidt presented Dr Fan with the Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning and Award for Excellence in Tutoring or Demonstrating to Ms Yoshida.
The Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning recognises and rewards the significant contribution that the staff member makes to the quality of student learning in higher education. In Dr Fan's case, the citation is for "inspiring language translation students to become independent learners and critical thinkers through the development of innovative, creative and engaging curricula and resources".
Dr Fan's approach to teaching utilises online technologies to support student learning. Since 2013, he has created and used his own "e-textbook" for his translation courses, using bilingual articles from The New York Times as a resource for students to comment on the linguistic and cultural issues being dealt with.
"I have researched and implemented a series of online tools and apps for both inside and outside classroom activities, so that students can have access to and make use of frequently used online tools".
"One important aspect of the joys associated with teaching comes from the satisfaction with students' achievement when they implement what they have learned in the courses for surprising results".
The Award for Excellence in Tutoring or Demonstrating recognises the critical importance of tutors and demonstrators to core teaching and learning activities. It celebrates the most outstanding tutors and demonstrators in the University.
Ms Yoshida designs her tutorials based on the concept of immersion, to help her students develop their Japanese language skills in a comprehensive and holistic manner.
"I believe the most effective approach to teaching Japanese language within a tutorial environment is to have students engage enthusiastically, without feeling embarrassed or afraid to make mistakes, as they test and improve the application of their language ability and comprehension."
